The hiring process for Trooper Candidates is structured, rigorous and detailed. It is designed to help select those applicants who are most qualified. Below you will find an overview of the process. You must successfully complete each step to move on in the process.
Applicant Orientation
The first step for any applicant is the Applicant Orientation, an
open-house orientation conducted by members of the Recruitment Staff.
Orientations are held throughout the State. To view the most recent dates and times for the
Applicant Orientation, see the Orientation Locations page.
During the Applicant Orientation you will complete a
one-page pre-application and you will receive information about the
Maryland State Police.
Functional Fitness Assessment
You will be evaluated based on a standardized set of criteria. The standards are as follows:
Written Examination
You will complete a 100 question multiple-choice written examination
based upon a study guide you receive prior to the date of the
exam.
Oral Interview
You will sit before an interview board comprised of three members
of the Department. You will be asked personal background and problem solving questions. You will also need to display interpersonal
skills and knowledge of the Maryland State Police.
Polygraph & Background Investigation
You must submit to a detailed polygraph examination. In addition, an
investigator will research your background by contacting your friends,
relatives, employers, schools, etc.
Medical & Psychological Examinations
If you successfully complete all steps listed above you may receive a
Conditional Offer of Employment (COE). After the COE you will undergo
extensive medical and psychological screenings, including a written
psychological test and interview with the Department Psychologist.
Police Selection Committee
Upon the completion of all the above-listed steps, your employment package
will be assigned to a member of the Police Selection Committee. A comprehensive
review of all elements of the process will be conducted and presented to
the collective Committee which is comprised of a cross-section of both sworn and civilian members of the Department.
The Committee selects the candidates whose
credentials are most likely to meet the challenges of a career as a Trooper.
It is the goal of the Maryland State Police to hire applicants who possess the qualifications and the dedication to become a Trooper. Please understand that if you successfully complete all phases of this process, you MAY receive a Final Offer of Employment. Trooper Candidates are hired based upon the needs of the Department. Successful completion of all phases of the hiring process does not guarantee a Final Offer of Employment.
