Starting salary does not include shift differential,
uniform allowance or overtime.
The Maryland State Police offers a comprehensive compensation package for its Troopers. In
addition to the starting salary (which begins your first day in the Academy), MSP also offers:
- Applicant Processing from start to finish in approximately three months.
- Salary Increases each year for 18 years based on the current Salary Scale. All steps must be funded annually by the State Legislature and are not guaranteed.
- Promotion to Trooper First Class (TFC) after three years of
satisfactory service
- All Uniforms & Equipment provided by the Department
- Clothing Allowance of $1,300 per year (in addition to uniforms and equipment provided by the Department)
- Degree Program: Trooper Candiates who do not hold an Associate's Degree (or higher) when they enter the Police Academy may be eligible to complete their Associate's Degree upon graduation from the Police Academy. This is paid in full by the Department.
- Paid Leave
- Vacation: 10 - 25 days per year, based on years of service (may accrue up to 600 hours)
- Sick Leave: 15 days per year (may accrue unlimited sick leave). At retirement, unused sick leave will be credited toward your monthly compensation.
- Personal Leave: 6 days per year
- Holidays: 11 days per year
- Military Leave: 15 days per year (maximum) for members of the Armed Forces Reserves or National Guard
- Take Home Vehicles: your assigned vehicle may be used to commute to -and-from work and may be used off-duty (per Departmental regulations)
- Health Insurance: the State Police subsidizes 80% of the cost
of health insurance (PPO, POS or HMO)
- Retirement: voluntary retirement after 22 years of creditable service,
or at age 50. Prior military or public service (up to five years) may be credited toward your retirement. Excellent pension fund is separate from Social Security and other state pensions. Retirement is mandatory at age 60.
- GI Bill Compensation while attending the Academy (for those who are eligible)
- Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP): after 22 years of creditable service, sworn members may enter the DROP. While in the DROP, you may receive 100% salary + retirement for up to four years. For details about the DROP, please contact a Recruiter.
- Promotions: ample opportunities for promotion throughout your career. Currently, the promotional process occurs every two years. You may be eligible to participate in the promotional process for Corporal one year after attaining the rank of TFC.
- Family & Medical Leave: twelve weeks per year available for all Troopers to care for a child or family member.
- Blood Assurance Program: several blood drives are conducted each year to benefit MSP employees and their families.
- Death Benefits: death benefits consistng of your retirement contributions (plus interest) and a
percentage of your final salary will be paid to your beneficiaries in the event of a line-of-duty death. The exact amounts vary with your years of service.
- Specialized Assignments: upon completion of Field Training, troopers may request transfers to any unit within the Department.
- Flight Pay: for Flight Paramedics assigned to the Aviation Command (per Command guidelines).
